When you find yourself starting to get triggered, angry, defensive, intimidated, overwhelmed, do you immediately jump to conclusions? What if, instead, next time you made a conscious choice to start with questions?

You know that moment when someone casually asks, “I haven’t seen you in ages, what’s new?”, and you have that nanosecond discussion with yourself . . . “Who is this person, how much time do I have, what is the intention behind their question, how much should I reveal, what is my current mood? And honestly, my life changes every three minutes, how could I possibly catch you up on the last two years?”

Over the years I have been asked many times “How do you do it all? Did you invent a machine that creates more time?” I believe that many people who ask this have a mental image of lists of priorities and that it is a zero sum game to pick among them.

I have been working with very busy philanthropists, nonprofit CEOs, policy makers, and other influential leaders for over 25 years. Each of them is extremely accomplished and at the top of their game in many ways.

I was at a week-long leadership workshop last year, and during the sessions we frequently noted what we were observing with the other participants. During one challenging exercise I said to the woman “I’ve noticed you have stopped breathing.”
